Fort Drum Real Estate

    Fort Drum, located 30 miles from Canada has Lake Ontario to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east and the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands to the north. Fort Drum comprised of 107,265 acres is the largest installation in the northeastern United States and serves as a training facility for Reserve and National Guard Units in the area. Initially called Pine Camp the name was later changed to Camp Drum and later to Fort Drum which became home to the 10th Mountain Division. 

    The base covers a large portion of Jefferson County including parts of Antwerp, Leray, Philadelphia and Wilna. Fort Drum is the largest Fish and Wildlife Management Act Cooperation Area in NY State with about 70,000 acres open for recreation. There are 3 lakes and 4 ponds on the installation; Indian Lake at 184 acres is the largest lake on Fort Drum.

    If you are coming to Fort Drum don’t let the stories of snow worry you. Yes we do have some snow-belt areas and we do get Lake Effect snow storms but the road crews are out in force during the winter and they take wonderful care of the roads. You will also find that the communities around Fort Drum are very Military friendly. The area is made up of many small towns including towns along Lake Ontario, Sackets Harbor, Dexter, Three Mile Bay and Chaumont. If you like the St. Lawrence River you may want to consider a home in Cape Vincent, Clayton or Alexandria Bay.
